1940年にニューヨークのMuseum of Modern Artが主催した「住宅家具のオーガニックデザイン」コンペの一環として、チャールズ・イームズとエーロ・サーリネンが共同でデザインした「Organic Chair（オーガニックチェア）」

特に当時は、技術的に量産が出来なかったほど、美しく造形された彫刻的なデザインは高く評価されました。
現在では現行品も生産されており、現代においても新鮮なデザインと、2人の偉大なデザイナーの唯一の共同作品ということもあり、常に人気を博している名作チェアの1つです。

2019年冬、そのオーガニックチェアに世界250脚限定のリミテッドエディション「シープスキン」が発売されました！

今までのオーガニックチェアを知っている人には、かなりインパクトのある見た目かと思いますが、空間に置いてみると違和感はなく、良い意味で存在感を与えてくれます。
もちろん座り心地は抜群で、今までのオーガニックチェアにも増して、柔らかく包み込まれるような印象です。

世界で250脚となりますので、日本への入荷数に限ると、かなり限られております。
将来的に考えると、かなり稀少性の高いものになりそうです。

＜Organic Chair＞
1907年、ミズーリ州セントルイスで生まれたチャールズ・イームズ (Charles Eames) は、セントルイスのWashington Universityで建築を学び、1930年にチャールズ・M・グレイと一緒にオフィスを立ち上げ、1935年にはロバート・T・ウォルシュとともに新たな建築事務所を設立しました。
1938年にCranbrook Academy of Artから奨学金を得た後、ミシガンに移り、 翌年にはデザインについての講義を行い、1940年には、Cranbrookのインダストリアルデザイン部門の責任者に就任しました。

建築家エリエル・サーリネン (Eliel Saarinen) の息子、エーロ・サーリネン (Eero Saarinen) は、1910年にフィンランドのキルッコヌンミに生まれました。
1929年から2年間、パリのAcadémie de la Grande Chaumière で彫刻を学んだ後、1934年まで、アメリカ、ニューヘイブンのYale Universityで大学の奨学金を受けながら建築を勉強する傍ら、ヨーロッパ各地を旅してまわりました。
1936年、彼はアメリカへ戻り、彼の父の建築事務所で見習いをしながら、ブルームフィールドヒルズのCranbrook Academyで教鞭を執りました。 この場でチャールズ・イームズと出会うこととなりますが、 彼らは出会ってすぐ意気投合し、共に新しい家具の形の実験をし、最初の成形合板の家具を開発したのです。

1940年に、彼らはニューヨークのMuseum of Modern Artで開催された、Organic Design in Home Furnishingsコンテストに共同名義としてオーガニックチェアを発表しました。

In 1940, a competition called “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” was held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen jointly to participate in the competition.

This beautifully shaped sculptural design was so highly appreciated that technical mass production was not possible at the time.
It is a popular chair because this design is still fresh and it is their only collaborative work.


"Charles Eames"
Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1907. He studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis and started an office with Charles M. Gray in 1930. He founded a new architectural office with Robert T. Walsh in 1935. In 1940, he was appointed Head of Industrial Design at Cranbrook.

"Eero Saarinen"
Born in Finland to famed architect Eliel Saarinen and textile designer Loja Saarinen in 1910. For two years since 1929, he studied sculpture at Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. He then moved to the United States where he studied architecture at Yale University until 1934. He also traveled around Europe. In 1936 he returned to the United States and studied at his father's architectural office. Meanwhile, he taught at Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills.

They meet for the first time. As soon as they met, they met and developed "Plywood furniture" together.
